The development of our pasta is connected to innovation
Association of Turkish Pasta Manufacturers (TMSD), which started its activities on October 25, 1993, continues to successfully represent the sector on national and international platforms. Association of Turkish Pasta Manufacturers, whose Chairman of the Board is Mr. Aykut GOYMEN and has 25 members operating in the pasta sector, acts with the mission of finding solutions to the problems of all stakeholders in the sector. The pasta sector has an important place in our country’s agricultural industry.
Our sector, which provides direct and indirect employment to approximately 50 thousand people, has an economic value of 2 billion dollars when its domestic and foreign trade volume is evaluated together. In addition, the sector is the world’s second largest exporter and producer and exports to more than 165 countries. TMSD; It is a founding member of the International Pasta Organization (IPO). For an adequate in-depth analysis of the pasta industry in Turkey, some questions were asked to Mr. Goymen, so that his answers could provide a comprehensive view of such a crucial sector.
1) What are the pasta production figures in Turkiye?
According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) data; 1 million 971 thousand tons of pasta was produced in Turkiye in 2023. 1 million 345 thousand tons of this figure was exported and 630 thousand tons were domestic consumption.
2) How was the hard wheat harvest compared to pasta production? How did this affect pasta prices?
Pasta production in Turkiye is largely dependent on durum wheat. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) data, 3.8 million tons of durum wheat was produced in Turkiye in 2022 and 4.3 million tons in 2023. Pasta production and prices are directly related to durum wheat production and supply. Decreases/increases in wheat harvest and export demands are important factors affecting pasta prices.
