World cereal season 2024
According to Usda estimates, EU cereal production for the upcoming season is expected to reach 274.8 million tons, slightly up from the 2022/23 production of 271 million tons. Soft wheat production is supposed to reach 129.85 million tons, a decrease from 2023 (134.63 million tons).
It should be noted that soft wheat areas decreased in France, Germany, Hungary, Romania and Poland, while increases were registered in Denmark and Italy. The increase in cereal production is mainly due to Spain as well as Scandinavian countries and Romania, which has become the EU’s fourth largest cereal producer. Countries such as France, Germany, Poland and Hungary declined.
From an agronomic point of view, excessive rainfall characterised the climate in the north-western countries of the European Union, preventing the main spring agricultural operations. From a commercial point of view, strong competition between Russia and Ukraine hampers the export of European grains to third parties. Cereal imports are expected to decrease throughout the EU – there should be a significant soft wheat drop in Spain and, to a lesser extent, also in Italy due to the greater availability of Italian products.
